Albuquerque –
Officers from the Albuquerque Police Department apprehended Dylan Lujan on Wednesday, February 7th, after he evaded a traffic stop in a stolen truck and collided with a pedestrian crossing Central Ave. and San Pablo in a crosswalk.
According to a criminal complaint, an APD officer observed a GMC truck with damaged tail lights and a missing license plate at 110 Indiana St. SE. The officer noted that there were multiple subjects standing around the truck and there were two individuals inside the truck. The officer made contact with Lujan and a female passenger identified as, Cassandra Sciarotta.
The court document says Lujan struggled to turn off the truck while speaking with the officer. Lujan told the officer he just bought the truck and that he had no ID on him. While the officer went back to his patrol unit to run the VIN, the truck came back stolen. Lujan then drove off from the traffic stop and the officer attempted to deploy a Starchase dart as it fled. The fleeing felon then sped up and fled east on Central. The APD officer was never able to get close enough to deploy the Starchase dart and the officer eventually lost sight of the vehicle and gave up trying to pursue.
A short time later, APD officers radioed that a pedestrian was hit by the GMC truck while it was fleeing. When officers arrived, they found a female in the street with a broken left thigh and a bloody face in a very grave state of health. The woman was immediately transported to UNMH by ambulance. The APD’s Fatal Crash team responded to investigate the incident that harmed the female pedestrian because her injuries appeared to be life threatening.
Yesterday, in our reporting of this incident, witnesses told us they saw three individuals struck by Lujan. The criminal complaint confirms in fact that only one person was hit by Lujan.
Following a brief pursuit, Lujan crashed into the Embudo Arroyo which goes along the north side of Indian School and they came to rest in a drainage tunnel. With the support of officers from the Foothills Area Command, SE command, and APD K9 units, law enforcement safely apprehended Lujan and his girlfriend passenger. The pair were found hiding in the underground tunnel system where the rats, centipedes, and cockroaches roam free. The girlfriend, Cassandra Sciarotta, had a case of sudden acute incarceritis and was transported to a local hospital for a short time however she was subsequently booked into MDC on outstanding warrants and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer because she fled from the truck.
Cassandra Sciarrotta
Lujan was arrested and charged with Great Bodily Harm by Vehicle, Receiving or Transferring a Stolen Vehicle, Aggravated Fleeing, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident (GBH).
