KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. – If you see smoke coming from KAFB tomorrow or see other strange things on base don’t be alarmed. Kirtland Air Force Base officials tell us that they will be conducting a readiness exercise on the base today Wednesday, April 23.

The exercise is designed to test and improve Kirtland’s emergency response procedures in cooperation with Sunport International Airport and Albuquerque first responder agencies.

During the exercise, officials tell us the public may see smoke, emergency vehicles, and first responders operating on or near the flight line and runways.

KAFB officials tell us do not be alarmed—this is a planned training event and not a real emergency.

KAFB staff goes on to say that the safety and preparedness of Airmen and their mission partners on Kirtland Air Force Base is a top priority. These exercises ensure our personnel are fully prepared to respond quickly and effectively to any situation.
