Albuquerque –
The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) has reported the passing of an inmate while they were in custody.
The individual has been identified as Julian Wilgress, a 36-year-old man born on June 5, 1989. Wilgress was booked into MDC on April 27, 2026.
At approximately 1:01 PM on April 28, a medical emergency code was activated due to an inmate in critical condition. Medical personnel from the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) swiftly responded in coordination with the UNM Hospital’s medical team. They administered life-saving measures, but unfortunately, Wilgress passed away at 1:49 p.m.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) arrived at the facility to investigate the incident. As per standard protocol, the MDC Office of Professional Standards is also investigating the matter.
The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
In 2025, Wilgress had been booked into MDC on multiple occasions for Possession of a controlled substance (felony) and Use or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and outstanding warrants for Possession of a controlled substance (felony) and Use or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
In 2024, BCSO arrested Wilgress, then 35-years-old, after he attempted to carjack an individual. During the pursuit, Wilgress led deputies on a foot chase through Old Town. Upon his arrest, deputies discovered that he was in possession of fentanyl pills.
This is the second inmate death announced by MDC since April 27th at 5:34 AM. Yesterday, MDC stated that 18-year-old Derrick Benavidez died at UNMH at 5:34 AM after being found in a medical emergency by MDC staff at approximately 4:49 AM on April 27.
