Albuquerque – APD’s Fatal Crash Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a semi-truck that occurred early this morning around 7AM. The fatal crash happened in the area of 98th St. and Avalon Rd., N.W.
Investigators determined that a white Harley Davidson was traveling south on 98th St. at a high rate of speed. The motorcycle ran the red light at 98th and I-40 going south on 98th. Meanwhile at the intersection of 98th and Avalon a blue semi-truck was attempting to make a left-hand turn from eastbound Avalon to northbound 98th. The semi-truck had a protected green arrow turn signal. Eastbound Avalon had a full green light with green arrow and had the right of way.
The motorcycle was seen again on video traveling at a high rate of speed. The motorcycle ran the red light for southbound traffic at the intersection of 98th and Avalon and slammed into the side of the semi-truck’s trailer.
The motorcycle driver died instantly at the scene. There were no signs of impairment or intoxication for the semi-truck driver. The crash is still under investigation. However, the primary cause of the crash at this time is the motorcyclists high speed and his failure to yield at the red light.
