The Albuquerque Police Department’s Fatal Team is investigating a crash in the Northeast Heights where a motorcyclist was killed.
Officers arrived shortly after 6:00 AM at Candelaria Rd. and San Mateo Blvd. N.E., responding to reports that a vehicle collided with a motorcycle. The motorcyclist died at the scene.
Westbound Candelaria is closed as officers continue their investigation.
UPDATE FROM APD:
The APD Fatal Crash Team’s preliminary investigation determined a yellow Vespa Primavera motorcycle and a bronze Infiniti Q60 was involved were involved in the crash about 6:30 a.m.
The Infiniti Q60 was driving northbound on San Mateo Blvd NE passing the intersection at Candelaria Rd NE. The Vespa Primavera was in the parking lot at 3008 San Mateo NE (Shell gas station) attempting a right turn onto northbound San Mateo. When the Vespa made the turn onto southbound San Mateo Blvd NE, the Infiniti Q60 collided into the rear end of the Vespa. The motorcycle was occupied by just the rider and the Infiniti Q60 was occupied by just the driver. The motorcycle rider was pronounced deceased on scene by medical personnel. All evidence on scene was gathered and collected by detectives.
The crash investigation is on-going.
APD arrested 19-year-old Eliazar Torres on Friday night and charged him with homicide by vehicle. Eliazar ran the red light at Candelaria and was going 75 MPH when he hit the motorcyclist. In addition Eliazar had been pulled over a week before by State Police for driving 120 MPH in a 75 zone. Hope they lock him up and throw away the keys. Condolences to the victims family.
