Eight days later, he is charged with the murder of a man in the North Valley of Albuquerque.

On November 17th, APD homicide detectives charged 18-year-old Dominic Speer for the Monday shooting death of a man in the North Valley. The victim has not yet been identified.

Officers in the Valley Area Command initially responded Monday shortly after 8 p.m. to reports of a possible shooting in the 2900 block of Carlton St. N.W. The person who called 911 reported that someone had been shot and there was a black, shiny, new model SUV near the victim. The caller also said a man dragged the victim out of a vehicle.

As officers arrived in the area of Claremont and 1st St., they were told that the suspect vehicle was leaving the scene. Officers saw a black SUV turn west onto Claremont and officers yelled at the driver to stop. The vehicle ignored police and accelerated rapidly away from officers. Police identified the vehicle as a Ford Bronco and got a partial identification of the license plate.

Officers did not locate a shooting victim at the scene, but they located a gun projectile and blood in the area where the 911 caller said he saw a man being dragged.

Officers used a license plate reader to locate a black Ford Bronco on Albuquerque’s West Side that appeared to match the suspect vehicle. The license plate was determined to be stolen.

Officers eventually located the Bronco at Montano Rd. and Unser Blvd. N.W. Officers pursued the Bronco, which eventually hit speeds above 100 miles per hour. The Bronco hit a light pole at Unser Blvd. and Ladera Dr. The driver, later identified as Dominic Speer, exited the vehicle and ran eastbound toward Walmart, where he was taken into custody. According to the criminal complaint, Speer was taken to UNMH for some pain complaints associated most likely with incarceritis.j

Officers located a deceased body (not yet identified)in the trunk of the Bronco. Officers also located a gun, a magazine, and an unspent cartridge casing in the rocks at the scene.

Speer is charged with an open count of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated fleeing law enforcement officer, two counts of tampering with evidence, criminal damage to property, resisting, evading arrest, unlawful possession of a firearm by a person under 19, and reckless driving.

Five years ago, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office had a missing juvenile report for a Dominic Speer, who was found safe. It is unclear what Speer’s youth record was, as those are sealed.
