Albuquerque –
Around 10 PM on Thursday, April 24, a crash occurred on I-40 eastbound (EB) near Carlisle. According to preliminary information, an individual may have run into the lanes of traffic, causing vehicles on the interstate to crash. One vehicle struck the person who entered the roadway.
When officers from the New Mexico State Police arrived, they declared one person, reportedly a woman, dead at the scene. Another individual was transported to a local area hospital. Their condition is not known.
At the time of the incident, authorities closed I-40 eastbound at Carlisle to allow the NMSP to investigate. They diverted traffic off the interstate using the off-ramp. The closure caused traffic on I-40 EB to back up to the Big-I.
Authorities purportedly reopened I-40 EB at Carlisle sometime around midnight.
We contacted the NMSP at 10:35 PM to inquire about the cause of the crash. They responded at 2:38 AM on Friday, April 25 stating “NMSP is handling a fatal crash investigation on I-40 near Carlisle, involving a pedestrian. I-40 east was affected but has since reopened.“

Map shows closure from April 24, 2025 @10 PM. Lanes of traffic have since reopened.
