Man Convicted of Drug Possession in Swift Verdict

On October 21, 2024, a jury found Manuel Moya guilty of two counts of drug possession. The swift verdict, reached in less than 25 minutes, followed Moya’s February 2024 arrest on an outstanding warrant. Authorities recovered methamphetamine and fentanyl during the arrest. Moya faces additional charges of felon in possession of a firearm later this month.

Man Sentenced to Prison for 2015 Cold Case Rape

Saul Orozco was sentenced to six years in prison on October 23 for a 2015 rape. A jury convicted him in August of Criminal Sexual Penetration in the Second Degree. DNA evidence linked Orozco to the crime. In December, a felony warrant was issued for Orozco’s arrest after he failed to appear for trial. Agents from the Bernalillo County Discrict Attorney’s office later arrested Orozco. A volunteer special prosecutor handled this case on behalf of the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office.

Teen Charged in Deadly Confrontation with Homeowner

A 16-year-old was arrested on October 24 in connection with the fatal shooting of a homeowner who was protecting his property. The incident unfolded on December 16, 2023, in southwest Albuquerque.

The homeowner, alerted by his barking dogs, confronted a group of teens attempting to break into his vehicle. When he confronted them, the teens opened fire, tragically killing the homeowner.

The arrested teen is scheduled to appear in court on October 25, to face charges related to the homicide. Multiple arrests have been made in connection with this case, highlighting the ongoing investigation into this event.

Jury Convicts Terry Emker of Homicide by Vehicle in Fatal DWI Crash

On the afternoon of October 25, 2024, a jury found Terry Emker guilty of Homicide by Vehicle (DWI), Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. On April 1, 2023, Emker was driving south on Tramway near Comanche with his girlfriend, Amanda Bustamante, when he veered off the road, causing the vehicle to flip. Bustamante was ejected from the vehicle and died due to the crash. Emker’s sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.

Other Ongoing Murder Cases from the Week of October 21

The week of October 21, the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office was prosecuting four murder cases. The trial for Patrick Saavedra is still going on from what we could gather, it should resume on Monday. The court case with Jonathan Martinez continues on Monday, October 28th at 9AM. The trial for Vicente Rivera was supposed to resume on Monday, October 28th, but presently it shows court has been cancelled and there is supposed to be a status hearing/conference in person, in front of the Judge. Lastly, as we mentioned earlier, Terry Emker, was convicted of homicide by vehicle.
