We reached out to New Mexico State Police for an update on the fatal crash involving a SWAT officer from the Albuquerque Police Department. The NMSP sent an update on the accident investigation, which included the identity of the woman killed.
On July 23rd, 2026 at 4:02 p.m., NMSP was asked to take over a fatal crash involving an APD officer and another motorist. The crash occurred at the intersection of NM-47 and Isleta Lakes Rd. The initial investigation indicated that the APD officer was enroute to a tactical callout and he was running lights and sirens Northbound on Highway 47.
In a previous story, APD Communications Director Gilbert Gallegos said “It wasn’t a full blown SWAT call out yet. Tactical officers were responding to assist ISU detectives in Albuquerque.”
State Police went on to say, a red Honda traveling Southbound on Highway 47 was attempting to turn left when the APD unit struck the passenger side of the Honda.
The female driver of the Honda was identified as 65-year-old Mireya Molina Ortiz. She was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. State Police said in an email that at this time, no charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police with the assistance of their vehicular crimes unit.
We asked State Police of the identity of the officer but they declined to provide the information stating he has not been charged with a crime.
