ALBUQUERQUE – APD’s traffic unit has had an extremely busy 24 hours investigating serious injury and fatal crashes. APD tells us that the first crash happened around 9:45PM last night February 12, 2023 when a vehicle lost control as it attempted to change lanes. The vehicle collided with another vehicle, spun around and got hit by a semi-truck. The driver of the first vehicle exited their car and appeared to try and run towards the shoulder of the freeway but the person was hit by a fourth vehicle as they ran across the interstate. The driver was transported to a local hospital where they were last listed in critical condition. Speed and alcohol are still to be determined.

Today on February 13, 2023 APD announced that another crash happened at around 1:00a.m. APD traffic officers were called out to a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Montgomery and Pennsylvania. The vehicle involved in the crash was a white 2002 Pontiac. The vehicle was westbound on Montgomery and crossed the intersection at Pennsylvania. The driver stated as he went through the intersection on a green light, he struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk who was crossing on the westside of the intersection. The pedestrian appears to have been crossing Montgomery against the crosswalk signal.

The driver of the Pontiac stated the light was green and he was going the speed limit. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash. Follow up investigation is ongoing, however at this time, the crash does appear to be pedestrian error.

Later in the day a second fatal crash then happened at around 5:45a.m. Motors officers were called out again to a fatal crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian. The vehicle was a silver Nissan 4 door and was going northbound on Unser approaching Paradise.

The pedestrian was said to have been kneeling in the middle of the roadway possibly picking up his chihuahua dog. The vehicle struck the vehicle and the dog, both of which ended up dying as a result of the crash.

APD says that at this point, speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the fatal crash. The investigation is still ongoing but at this time appears to be from pedestrian error.

A third fatal crash happened at around 8:30AM when BCSO said their deputies were on scene of a crash going eastbound Paseo Del Norte at the Rio Grande River. It was confirmed by medical personnel on scene that one person is deceased. The scene is actively being investigated.

Paseo Del Norte eastbound from Coors Blvd to 2nd St was closed for several hours while BCSO traffic officers investigated.
