Albuquerque –
At approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, City of Albuquerque crews closed San Pedro over I-40 both northbound and southbound. Heavy rains caused a large piece of concrete to impact a bridge pier, or support, at San Pedro.
The closure, affecting a crucial thoroughfare for commuters and residents alike, was enacted promptly to ensure public safety and prevent further potential damage to the bridge’s structure. The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) swiftly responded by dispatching inspectors to the scene to assess the extent of the damage. However, the recent heavy rainfall posed an additional challenge – the inspectors must wait for the water levels to recede before they can carry out a comprehensive evaluation.
The closure’s duration remains uncertain as it is contingent on the outcomes of the NMDOT’s assessment and subsequent decisions regarding repairs. While this disruption may cause inconvenience for travelers, it’s important to prioritize safety and structural integrity.
