Two New Speed Cams Go Live in Albuquerque, Expands City’s Camera Program to 38 Locations

Two new Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are now active in two of Albuquerque’s busiest corridors: southbound Tramway near Lomas and westbound Paseo del Norte west of Barstow.

The City will also activate two additional ASE cameras on Coors near St. Joseph’s in both the northbound and southbound lanes. The City anticipates those cameras will go live in early August.

The City launched its Automated Speed Enforcement program in 2022 to reduce dangerous speeding and improve roadway safety. Since then, the City says data indicates measurable changes in driver behavior, including lower average travel speeds and fewer motorists exceeding the speed limit. With the addition of the newest locations, Albuquerque now has 38 active or planned ASE camera locations.

The City says it selects ASE camera locations using a combination of crash history, High Fatality and Injury Network data, and community feedback. The City also maintains a memorandum of agreement with the New Mexico Department of Transportation that governs ASE camera placement on state-owned roadways, including Coors Boulevard and Paseo del Norte.

“With ASE cameras in place, drivers are slowing down on some of our highest-risk roadways, helping make Albuquerque streets safer,” said Department of Municipal Development Director Jennifer Turner.

According to the City, the first 20 ASE cameras contributed to significant safety improvements during the program’s first three years, including:

• A 54.7% to 96.2% reduction in drivers traveling 10 mph or more above the posted speed limit.
• A decrease in average vehicle speeds ranging from 0.6 mph to 8.8 mph, depending on the location.

City officials say revenue generated through the ASE program since its 2022 launch has been used to fund roadway safety improvements and support more than 31,000 hours of community service.
