Albuquerque – BCSO tells us that on September 8, 2023, at approximately 2:00 pm, a School Support Deputy from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, assigned to Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, was alerted by an Albuquerque Public School Police Officer about an incident on campus. The deputy was told two students who were friends of individuals involved in an altercation on school grounds were being detained.

Although the two juveniles were not directly involved in the original altercation, their heightened agitation caught the attention of the Albuquerque Public School Police Officer. Due to her rapport and past experience with these students, the officer felt compelled to further investigate their behavior. This inquiry led her to believe they might be in possession of firearms. Upon questioning by the APS Officer, and later by the School Support Deputy, the juveniles, in the presence of their guardians, admitted to having firearms stored in their vehicles parked on the school premises.

Acting on this confession, the BCSO Violent Crimes Unit promptly obtained and executed search warrants for both vehicles, confirming the presence of firearms. Juvenile #1 had a Black/Pink Taurus G3-C handgun under the driver’s seat, one black magazine and three rounds of ammunition. The handgun did not have a round in the chamber. Juvenile #2 had one Black American Tactical AR-15 style short barrel rifle behind the back left passenger seat that appeared to be hidden under a black jacket, one black magazine, 19 “LC” 5.56 rounds and two “Aguila 21” 5.56 rounds. The rifle did not have a round in the chamber.

Both 16-year-old students were taken into custody without incident on charges of Unlawful Carrying of a Deadly Weapon on School Premises.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office went on to say that they remain dedicated to ensuring the safety of our students and school staff. We are grateful for the ongoing cooperation and vigilant efforts of the Albuquerque Public School Police and their community.
