4 More Speed Cameras Installed Around Albuquerque, No Clear Data on How Many Have Paid Citations

ALBUQUERQUE – According to an e-mail, the City of Albuquerque expanded its Automated Speed Enforcement, or speed camera, program with four new cameras this week, bringing the City’s total to 34.

As of this week, the newest speed cameras went live on Fourth near Griegos, on Central at 61st east and westbound, and on Unser at Gwin.

In 2022, the City of Albuquerque installed Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras to help address widespread, dangerous speeding on city streets. City data is showing significant changes in driver behavior, with both average speeds and the number of drivers speeding decreasing.

“Crashes with injuries are down, and speeders are getting caught,” said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller. “We’re investing in technology that helps enforce traffic laws, reduce dangerous speeding, and protect everyone on our roads. The results are clear: fewer injury crashes and more accountability. Thank you, Albuquerque, for slowing down and helping keep our community safe.”

ASE cameras are now in 34 critical arteries in Albuquerque that were selected using a mix of crash data, the High Fatality and Injury Network maps, and local input. Since the program began, about 766,000 citations have been issued.

The e-mail did not specify how many of those citations were paid by the people who were caught on the cameras.

“ASE cameras are catching on nationwide as they can dramatically slow down traffic all day, every day,” said Jennifer Turner, Director of the Department of Municipal Development. “Our program has shown that speed cameras do work in Albuquerque and that drivers are slowing down. Slower speeds mean safer driving”

Reducing speeds is key, as a simple 10% reduction in speed can reduce the number of significant crashes by up to 19%, and can reduce the number of fatal car crashes by 34%.
