At approximately 3:40 PM, on Tuesday, March 25, Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to reports of a possible structure fire at 4816 McMahon Blvd. NW, the Puerta del Sol Apartments. We reported this incident to you as the firefighting efforts were underway.
According to AFR, Engine 21 arrived on scene and reported a working fire in a two-story multifamily dwelling on Division 2. The fire necessitated a two-alarm response, prompting additional fire units to be dispatched. Around 4:30 PM, AFR ordered all personnel to evacuate certain buildings for safety purposes. Firefighters then attacked the blaze defensively. This means that firefighters are fighting the fire from a safe distance, typically from the outside of the structure. AFR also worked simultaneously to prevent the fire from spreading to other apartments and to the surrounding brush.
At the time of the fire, New Mexico Gas and PNM were requested to shut off utilities to the affected buildings.
AFR Crews worked aggressively to contain the blaze, bringing it under control within about two hours. Several units sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage.
AFR reported that one firefighter was injured and transported for treatment, while a civilian was evaluated on scene and declined transport. The present condition of the injured firefighter is unknown.
AFR Fire Investigators are working to determine the fire’s cause and origin, which remains undetermined at this time. A total of 16 units were affected, displacing 24 residents. The Red Cross has been requested to assist with accommodations.
