Albuquerque, NM –
Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) crews had their hands full on the night of November 5, 2023. At approximately 3:40 AM, they received a distress call about a potential structure fire at 9414 Susan Ave SE, involving an abandoned mobile home. Engine 5 (E5) rushed to the scene, reporting a working fire that had already spread to the surrounding yard’s trash and debris.
As the situation unfolded, additional calls flooded AFR’s Alarm Room, prompting an upgrade to a structure fire response. Engine 5 confronted a sizable outdoor fire that threatened structures at a scrapyard located at Susan and General Somerville. AFR wasted no time, stretching a line and initiating a deck gun attack. The situation was exacerbated by a substantial fuel load in the yard, which included abandoned mobile homes.

Despite the challenges, AFR successfully extinguished the fire in just over an hour. Unfortunately, the abandoned structure was a total loss, but the good news is that there were no injuries among civilians. However, one firefighter sustained a minor injury during the operation.
The cause and origin of the fire remain unknown, but AFR Fire Investigators are working to uncover the details. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
