Albuquerque –
On October 27, 2024 at 2:26AM Engine 19 and Rescue 19 were dispatched to a high mechanism motor vehicle collision on I-25 Southbound at Comanche. Reports were of a single vehicle that hit the Jersey barrier resulting in a rollover. One patient was treated and transported with an AFR attendant to UNMH with lights and sirens as a result of that event.
A short time later a separate crash happened that involved an AFR personnel member.
According to a criminal complaint, Rebecca Melchor, 24, of Albuqureque was the suspect named in the violent drunk driving crash. She told officers she drank “a half a bottle of wine” and a “vodka cranberry” prior to the crash. New Mexico State police was the investigating agency.
The AFR firefighter Lieutenant had exited an Albuquerque Ambulance unit that was attending to the original crash patient and was struck by a passing vehicle while returning to the AFR Rescue unit. The impact caused a loss of consciousness and serious injuries to the AFR Lieutenant. Other AFR personnel immediately began treatment of their injured firefighter brother. An Albuquerque Ambulance crew happened to be in the area and helped by immediately transporting the injured firefighter along with other AFR crew members already on scene to UNMH. The firefighter still remains in serious but stable condition.
“This weekend, one of our own was seriously injured while answering a call for service,” said Fire Chief Emily Jaramillo. “AFR firefighters face these dangers daily, and we are reminded of their courage and commitment to service in moments like this. We hope for a full recovery and will continue to support him and his family as he recovers from these injuries.”
Melchor was charged with careless driving, open container, and great bodily harm by vehicle by DWI.
She has no problems, with APD’s Drunk Driver Unit!
Let me guess… mental health issues will be the cause, a “Mijo-ing” will be issued, and the pos drunk will be released without incident.
It appears she exercises the same skill set driving and parting her hair. Seriously I hope the AFD officer a speedy and full recovery.
The guy should not have been in the road… Period !!
Is there any evidence of her BAC? If not, then she is innocent until proven guilty of drunk driving. Please report with some integrity instead of being the police’s lap dogs.
Thank you… why was the guy in the roadway ? Any reflective attire ? Should have stayed out of the road … she appeared to go heal to toe pretty good… but they will test you till you fail…..
