Albuquerque –
Around 4:45 PM, crews from Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue were dispatched to 4220 Broadway Blvd SE, located off Broadway, south of Rio Bravo. This is the same recycling yard involved in the May 23 fire.
Responding crews were advised large piles of cardboard were ablaze. Around 4:52 PM, the fire was upgraded to a 2nd alarm as crews continued suppression efforts. Albuquerque Fire Rescue were dispatched.
BCFR states that a “total of 11 apparatus and 40 personnel are assigned to the incident. Additional support is being provided by Albuquerque Fire Rescue and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.”
The advisory from BCFR says “due to smoke impacting the surrounding area, residents are advised to turn off evaporative (swamp) coolers to help prevent smoke from being drawn into their homes.”
Based on videos we have been sent by people driving in the area, firefighters are battling an extensive fire that has spread to at least one building, and older scrap cars are on fire.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office has closed Broadway between Rio Bravo and Prosperity Ave.
If we learn more about this fire, we will update you.
UPDATE:
The building north of the original fire location at 4220 Broadway Blvd. SE has been destroyed by the fire. The structure is reportedly a used car dealership.
