Adil Syed is the son of Muhammad Syed, who is accused of killing three men in Albuquerque in 2022. The three victims were Muslim, as was Muhammad Syed, the perpetrator. In 2024, a jury found Muhammad Syed guilty of one of the murders, and he pleaded no contest to second-degree murder charges in two other shootings. Another son of Muhammad Syed’s, Shaheen “Maiwand” Syed, was investigated for his alleged role in the murders and for making false statements to federal investigators.

In May 2025, a girl reported to police that she was sexually assaulted by a man she met through social media, prompting APD detectives to begin investigating Adil Syed.

The girl told police that a man, later identified as Adil Syed, drove to her aunt’s home to pick her up. She and her female cousin got into the car with Syed, and they later picked up the girl’s male cousin at a different location. Syed then drove the group to a park, where the two cousins got out of the car. The victim told police Syed raped her inside the car while her cousins were away. When the cousins returned to the car, Syed drove them to a location near the girl’s grandmother’s home.

When they arrived, the victim’s male cousin fought with Syed. The cousin sustained serious injuries and was later taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

As part of their investigation, APD detectives contacted Syed to arrange a DNA search warrant. Syed told them he wanted to speak with an attorney before talking further or complying with the warrant. When neither Syed nor an attorney followed up, detectives obtained an arrest warrant.

On Friday, APD detectives arrested Syed in southwest Albuquerque. He was booked into the Metro Detention Center, charged with two counts of second degree criminal sexual penetration.

Prior incidents involving the Syed family include:

On May 2, 2018, officers responded to the New Mexico Human Services Department at 1711 Randolph Rd SE regarding a domestic violence call involving Muhammad Syed and his wife. Both parties gave conflicting accounts: Muhammad claimed his wife slapped and kicked him during an argument, while his wife stated Muhammad pulled her by the hair, kicked her out of their vehicle, and threw her to the ground at the office. An employee witnessed the wife distressed and crying on the floor, and Muhammad was subsequently arrested for battery on a household member based on probable cause of domestic abuse. This charge was later dismissed.

On December 23, 2018, at approximately 2:30 PM, officers were dispatched to Aspen Ridge Apartments, 820 Louisiana Blvd SE, for a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, APD officers found Shaheen “Maiwand” Syed in his bedroom, visibly upset and bleeding from a head injury caused by his father, Muhammad Syed, who had struck him with a metal spoon while allegedly assaulting his mother. Officers arrested Muhammad on probable cause of domestic abuse. This charge was vacated.

On February 27, 2022, officers were dispatched to 3500 block of Crest Ave SE following reports that Shaheen “Maiwand” Syed had physically assaulted his father, Muhammad Syed, and sister. During the investigation, Muhammad Syed stated that Shaheen “Maiwand” had hit him in the face after first attacking his sister for unknown reasons. Despite visible injuries, the family was largely uncooperative, with the sister refusing to confirm the events and the mother denying that anything had occurred. Per the criminal complaint, APD officers noted prior incidents involving Shaheen “Maiwand” and the sister, including previous hospitalizations and CYFD involvement. This charge was later dismissed.

On April 8, 2025, around 8:05 PM, officers responded to a family dispute at 10000 block of Walnut Canyon Rd SW. Prior to officers arriving at the residence, a family member flagged down an officer and reported that his brother, Adil Syed, punched him during a verbal argument that began while they were eating. Based on visible injuries, the brother’s account, and a witness statement from their sister, APD officers determined there was probable cause to issue a summons to Adil Syed for misdemeanor battery. On June 10th, 2025, this case was dismissed.
