APD IDs Man Who Shot 120 Rounds from His Apartment Before Deadly OIS

Today, the Albuquerque Police Department identified the man shot by police as 39 year old Sean Omara on Tuesday. Omara died at the scene as a result of his gunshots.

Officers in the Northwest Area Command responded to reports of shots fired on August 11, 2026, at the Odyssey Apartments, located at 10600 Cibola Loop NW. Officers attempted to contact the man for several hours while he was barricaded inside the apartment, but he refused to cooperate.

Apartment tenants of building 15, where Omara was holed up, were evacuated for their safety. Later, a resident who reportedly refused to evacuate and instead remained in their apartment called 911 to report that their unit, located on a floor below Omara’s, was flooding. Officers helped safely evacuate the resident. While officers were on scene, the fire alarm sounded for hours, and officers worked to disable it.

SWAT officers later responded and again attempted to contact the man. While officers were on scene, Omara fired a handgun and a rifle multiple times.

Shortly after 6 PM, Omara exited the apartment, onto the patio, with a rifle in his hand. Two SWAT (Special Operations Unit) officers fired their rifles, striking Omara. Officers attempted medical aid, but Omara died at the scene. 

During the on-scene investigation, investigators reportedly located 122 fired cartridge cases inside Omara’s apartment.

When residents were able to return to their apartments, one occupant provided us photos showing bullet holes in their apartment walls. The tenant was also told by building maintenance that Omara had shot a water line in Unit 15, causing flooding in some of the apartments below.

According to APD, over the next several months, the Multi-Agency Task Force will continue to investigate and analyze this incident. Detectives will interview any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests.

After the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office to make any determination of criminal charges.

APD’s Internal Affairs Force Division will also investigate the shooting to determine whether the department’s policies were followed. The results of the administrative investigation will be forwarded to the city’s Superintendent of Police Reform to make final decisions on discipline.

APD’s Force Review Board, made up of deputy chiefs, will also review the incident to identify trends and potential policy changes that may be needed in response to any shortcomings that are identified.
