Man Who Shot Up His Apartment Complex Terrorizing Residents Killed by SWAT After Lengthy Standoff at NW ABQ Apartment Complex

The man at the center of today’s lengthy standoff with the Albuquerque Police Department has been shot and killed by SWAT officers in an officer-involved shooting.

The man had fired multiple rounds (just under 100 rounds by some counts) before he was killed. When officers originally responded to the scene around noon they attempted to negotiate with him. Officers had evacuated the entire apartment building where the man was barricaded inside and were in the process of evacuating additional units when the officer-involved shooting occurred.

All officers are reportedly okay.

The standoff began earlier today at the Odyssey Apartments, located at 10600 Cibola Loop NW, after APD responded to reports of multiple shots fired by a resident.

A witness told us they heard multiple shots, followed by the building’s fire alarm sounding. Another resident also contacted us and reported hearing what they believed were gunshots.

While on scene, we saw officers rushing residents out of the area to safety.

As the situation developed, APD urged residents to shelter in place while officers worked to make contact with the man inside the apartment. APD’s SWAT Unit and crisis negotiators attempted to convince the man to surrender but their attempts were not successful.

We received numerous messages from residents who were displaced during the standoff, including families with children who were required to leave their homes as APD officers worked to secure the area. One person told us they will need to find temporary housing overnight due to damage caused to their apartment by the barricaded man during the SWAT incident.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the Multi Agency Task Force. We have a reporter on scene working to gather additional information and will provide updates as more details become available.
