Reportedly, around 4AM, APD Officers in the Valley area command were dispatched to 1500 Candelaria Rd NE, in response to an individual laying in the roadway. We observed an adult male in his late 30s to mid 40s in the middle of the street with tattoos all over his body and head. The crime scene investigators put three markers around the body. It did not appear they had any markers for bullet casings.

As of 9:45AM, the area east and westbound Candelaria Rd NE was open in both directions between Pan American Fwy (Frontage Road) and just east of High St NE.  It was closed for some time and it caused many of the businesses along that corridor to make adjustments to their schedules.

In an email sent shorty after 9:45AM, Gilbert Gallegos, APD’s Civilian Director of Communications said homicide detectives determined the victim who died overnight was shot around 1:30AM. The adult male was shot from behind as he was walking on Candelaria Rd. NE near I-25. At about 4:40AM, the man crawled into the traffic lanes where he was struck by a vehicle.

For the Albuquerque area, this is the 8th reported homicide for 2023.
