Interstate 40 westbound is closed at San Mateo due to a fatal motor vehicle crash. Traffic on I-40 westbound is being slowed at Louisiana and drivers are required to exit at San Mateo.

Just before 2:15 PM on Saturday, a crash on I-40 westbound was observed and reported to police. Officers from the Albuquerque Police Department, Albuquerque Fire Rescue, and Albuquerque Ambulance Service responded.

Upon arrival, officers observed the crash impacting at least the two right lanes of traffic, and one occupant of a vehicle was reportedly ejected. Albuquerque Fire Rescue and Albuquerque Ambulance Service rendered medical aid, and the ejected individual was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The person reportedly died en route to the hospital or shortly after arrival.

The New Mexico State Police have assumed control of the investigation because the crash occurred on the interstate. All westbound lanes of Interstate 40 remain closed following the fatal crash. Lanes closures are subject to change.

Based on traffic cams, it appears that APD and the NMSP have reopened the two left lanes and left shoulder.

Please use caution while driving through the area, as APD, NMSP, and APD Police Service Aides are positioned around the crash scene.
