Albuquerque –

On the night of September 26, 2024*, at 8:17 PM, a hiker called 911 after getting lost off-trail with no food, water, or warm clothing. Yesterday, we informed you as AFR was being dispatched to the incident. The hiker was off trail and was unable to move in the complicated terrain. Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) fielded the call, quickly verifying his location and performing a remote medical assessment. AFR dispatched a full back-country rescue team, including multiple engines, rescue squads, and battalion chiefs.

In their update this morning, authorities did not disclose where the actual rescue took place. It was also not stated the specific trail where the hiker got lost. Lastly, the hiker’s name was not released. However, information we gathered last night revealed that AFR responded to the Embudito/Foothills Trailhead at 5000 Cumbre Del Sur Ct NE.

Though the hiker was uninjured, he reportedly lacked the essentials to survive the night. AFR initiated a large-scale operation with assistance from New Mexico State Police Search and Rescue Team (SAR), Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) Open Space, and Albuquerque Police Department’s (APD) Open Space to bring him to safety. AFR’s Heavy Technical Rescue (HTR) was also sent.

After hours of searching, the rescue team reached the hiker at 12:30 AM, providing food and water. The hiker was able to walk out with the crew, with all rescue units returning by 4:00 AM.

Update:

Amended date, this incident began on the night of September 26, 2024. It was concluded on the morning of September 27, 2024.
