In a recent court decision, Malcolm Torres, a 30-year-old man from Española, New Mexico, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison. This sentence comes after Torres pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on April 10, 2023. The case revolved around the tragic death of his five-year-old stepdaughter, Renezmae Calzada, in September 2019.
On September 7, 2019, Torres was at home with Renezmae and his 18-month-old son. He had been consuming excessive amounts of alcohol and was unfit to care for the children. The following day, Renezmae’s grandparents returned home to find her missing. Despite their efforts and the assistance of law enforcement, Torres provided false and misleading information, obstructing the search for Renezmae.
Tragically, Renezmae’s lifeless body was discovered in the Rio Grande River on September 11, 2019. The autopsy revealed that she had suffered blunt-force trauma to her head, torso, and extremities. Torres had driven her body to a location 5.5 miles from their home and left her there.
Torres initially denied responsibility for Renezmae’s death, blaming it on a fall or an unknown house guest. It took almost four years for him to acknowledge his role in this tragedy.
Torres’ sentence of 35 years is the result of a plea agreement, which saw him avoid a potential life imprisonment or death penalty by pleading guilty to second-degree murder. After serving his prison term, Torres will be subject to five years of supervised release.
