Man Dies at MDC During Distress Call

The Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center sent a notice that an inmate passed away at the facility. The email says, despite rigorous life-saving efforts, an inmate died Monday at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC).

The inmate who passed away, Jason McCoy, age 46, died early Monday morning at approximately 5:09 a.m. McCoy was discovered in distress by a corrections officer at approximately 4:18 a.m., prompting an emergency code to be called. MDC staff, alongside the UNM Hospital medical team, quickly responded and initiated life-saving measures. Ambulance services and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) arrived at the facility at 4:51 a.m., and life-saving efforts continued until McCoy was pronounced deceased at 5:09 a.m.

In accordance with standard procedures, the incident is under investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards and BCSO.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the official cause of death.

McCoy was in custody for domestic violence charges ranging from strangulation, 2 counts of battery, and domestic violence with arrest.
