Albuquerque –
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department’s Southwest Area Command were sent to a home in the 400 block of Mayfair Pl. SW, this is near 86th St SW and Shelby Ave SW. The call was in reference to a man threatening suicide. During an attempt to make contact with the individual, APD officers initially tried to enter the residence. However, due to concerns for officer safety and in an effort to de-escalate the situation, they allegedly evacuated the residence. Officers established a perimeter around the dwelling and reportedly, they made several public announcements (PAs) to the man.
At around 3:55 PM, multiple officers outside of the perimeter heard a gunshot come from the backyard area of the residence. Unsure of what had just transpired, law enforcement personnel persistently issued more announcements urging the individual to surrender or for him to establish contact with APD officers.
At around 4:20 PM, an officer used a drone and police were able to see that the man had died, presumably from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating this death. The task force detectives are investigating the incident as an in-custody death because the man appeared to have shot himself while officers were at the scene setting up a perimeter.
