Albuquerque –
A Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF) is currently investigating a police encounter that resulted in the death of a man overnight.
Officers from the Albuquerque Police Department responded to a 911 call on Thursday shortly after 7:00 PM at an apartment complex. The complex is located at 6200 Indian School Rd NE. The caller said he was armed with a knife and he told 911 that people were shooting at him. The individual disclosed a diagnosis of schizophrenia and expressed intentions to kill someone.
The statement the media received from APD stated that, “When officers arrived, the man was on the phone with 911 and arguing with others in the parking lot. Officers attempted to take the man into custody and used force to place him in handcuffs. During the struggle, the man lost consciousness.”
Last night, a person who was in the area contacted ABQRAW and stated they saw CPR being performed and additional life-saving measures being conducted. The man was later declared to be deceased.
The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating the incident as an in-custody death because the man died while officers were attempting to arrest him.
