Albuquerque –

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the deployment of New Mexico National Guard personnel to support the Albuquerque Police Department in response to ongoing public safety challenges in the city, particularly along the Central Avenue corridor and other specific areas.

The emergency request from APD cites the fentanyl epidemic and rising violent juvenile crime as critical issues requiring immediate intervention. Additional support is needed to maintain momentum in addressing these challenges.

“The safety of New Mexicans is my top priority,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “By deploying our National Guard to support APD with essential duties, we’re ensuring that trained police officers can focus on what they do best–keeping our communities safe. This partnership represents our commitment to addressing the fentanyl crisis and juvenile crime with every resource at our disposal.”

Between 60-70 National Guard personnel will be deployed to Albuquerque beginning in mid-May. Their training to assist APD is already underway under the supervision of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security, Department of Public Safety, State Police and APD.

The initiative aims to improve public safety and quality of life for Albuquerque residents by addressing immediate needs while working toward long-term solutions to the city’s most pressing public safety challenges.

National Guard personnel will assist in multiple support areas including:

  • Scene security and traffic control at critical incidents
  • Medical assistance and humanitarian efforts along Central Avenue
  • Prisoner Transport Unit assistance
  • Transit security enhancement
  • Metro Court security support
  • Aviation/Sunport security assistance
  • Shield Unit case preparation support
  • APD Drone Program operational assistance

This strategic deployment will allow APD to reallocate police resources to enforcement activities while maintaining 24/7 continuous essential services. The National Guard will serve as a visible, trusted presence supporting law enforcement duties, which will enhance officer presence in high-crime areas and reinforce community trust through visible engagement.

A memorandum from APD Chief Harold Medina to the governor requesting assistance and Executive Order 80 are attached. https://www.governor.state.nm.us/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/033125-Ltr-from-Medina-to-GMLG-re-National-Guard.pdf

We reached out to the Governor’s office to see if military vehicles would be visible in the areas of focus. However, as of this publication, we have not heard back from them.

    1. I agree, the State needs to update, that is not an excuse for lack of leadership. Funny the city has survived on the same laws for decades and suddenly that is the blame for lack of police presence. Medina does not believe in intervention and has to many detectives and not enough street cops. He will never see the mistakes he made and the dangers he has caused this city because he thinks intervention needs to come at the high level of a murder.

  1. What took so long? Crime has been spiraling out of control for a long time here. Might as well leave the National Guard on permanent patrol here. Let me guess… Their hands will be tied, or they will be forced to use the velvet gloves on criminals. Their presence will be symbolic. It’s not like these politicians actually want to solve the problem

    1. Maybe the youtuber profiling the war zone as the absolute worst neighborhood he has been to is getting atrentiin..maybe they are like well crap, we have to do something..finally. This place is unlivable at this point

    1. Why do we have a mayor then? Where is his accountability? Put it all on someone who has no idea of the day to day activities in the city but Keller does. Keller runs around crime scenes acting like he’s a cop, he needs to go.

    1. The Consent Degree APD was under expired. Now, APD investigates their own and trust me it’s BS. I was a victim of their abuse, and suffered the consequences. Previously, I was the biggest fan of APD because I worked closely with them. My perspective changed when I called for help.

    1. Oh and who is going to beat him? Mayling Armijo? LMAO
Sorry idiot, your brown woman DEI candidate won’t stand a chance.
Even if she won, you think a woman would be better than Keller? DELUSIONAL!

  2. Just watched channel 13 news and soy boy Keller said there would be no weapons on guard personnel, no military vehicles, or no military uniforms and no arrests by guardsmen. So it begs the question, what will be their duty? Window dressing for a failed Governor and failed mayor who just want to save face after a documentary exposed their incompetence and malfeasance!

    1. They are doing prisoner transports, without a gun, using city cars. They gonna wait for Medina to put the grave stone on all of apd? Finish the job that RayRay started hu? DWI Enterprise founder.

  3. Gee I hope none of the weekend warriors get hurt. This mission is a little tougher than the daily burrito run. Will they be allowed to keep one bullet in their shirt pocket for emergencies, like Barney?
