UPDATE – NMSP: Adult, Young Child Killed in Crash Involving the NM Rail Runner

San Felipe Pueblo, NM –

According to the New Mexico State Police, an accident has occurred on State Road 313 near milepost 15 near San Felipe Casino. A vehicle was struck by the Rail Runner at a private railroad crossing and the two occupants of the vehicle were killed. This is an ongoing investigation and the NMSP are asking people to avoid the area. The passengers that were aboard the Rail Runner train are being transported to their destinations via bus. Rail Runner service has also been suspended for the day.

The NMSP have released preliminary findings from their investigation, which shows a Jeep Cherokee SUV, driven by Derrick Tenorio (30), was driving east on a private road towards State Road 313. Tenorio tried to drive over a private rail road crossing when the Jeep Cherokee was struck on the driver’s side by a Rail Runner train that was traveling southbound. Tenorio was accompanied by a six-year-old female child, the female child was seated in the passenger seat, both Tenorio and the female child sustained fatal injuries. The Office of the Medical Examiner pronounced both deceased at the scene.

According to the NMSP, this crash remains under investigation and the NMSP Accident Reconstruction Unit will be assisting with accident reconstruction. The NMSP will not release the name of the child victim to respect the privacy of the victim’s family.
