One Critically Wounded in Shooting on 98th, APD Investigating

Albuquerque –

At approximately 11:55 AM, the Albuquerque Police Department were notified of a possible shooting in the area of 98th and De Vargas. There was also at least one ShotSpotter activation in this area. When APD officers arrived, they found a person shot at least once.

Medics are transporting the individual with the gunshot wound to a local hospital. The person is reportedly in critical condition.

A witness told us they saw a man laying in the middle of the median with a gunshot wound to the head. The witness said the man was shaking from the trauma while they loaded up the man into the ambulance.

While on scene, we observed an APD vehicle that had stopped near the victim’s location and saw an employee transferring equipment from it. An APS spokesman confirmed it was an APS employee at the scene.

“We believe our employee stopped to render possible assistance at the scene,” said Phill Casaus

Executive Director, Communications and Engagement

APD is currently searching for the offender and APD is advising that the Westgate Community Center and ABC Preschool & Childcare shelter-in-place at this time.

De Vargas is reportedly closed between 98th and the Circle K on Snow Vista Trail. Police are in the area, and street closures might change after this is published.

We have a reporter heading to the scene and will provide updates as we learn more.
