Albuquerque –
Around 12:59 AM on April 3, 2025, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department were in the 8500 block of Marquette Ave. NE and reported a structure fire to dispatchers. Purportedly, officers attempted to made entry to the burning structure to rescue individuals trapped inside but were unable. APD could be heard asking dispatch for additional assistance, and to send Albuquerque Fire Rescue as the structure was now fully evolved in flames. AFR Engine 5 arrived first, to report a working fire of a two-story multi-dwelling structure. Rescue 5 and Ladder 5 began removing individuals from inside the structure.
At the time of the incident, three unconscious individuals were pulled from inside the structure, two were not breathing. Emergency personnel was heard rendering aid to the persons. One person received CPR for over 40 minutes but died on scene. Two other patients were taken to UNMH, and were reportedly listed in critical condition.
AFR had stated that “this building is abandoned and not in normal use.”
Earlier today, AFR’s Fire Investigators are on scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire. A cause has not been determined at this time. While conducting their investigation, AFR Fire Investigators typically try to speak to the individuals removed from any fire(s), but two of the individuals were unable to talk to AFR Fire Investigators due to injuries. Lieutenant Jason Fejer, the public information officer (PIO) and also an emergency medical technician (EMT) at AFR, stated that the investigation will require time before a definitive cause of the blaze can be determined.
Lt Fejer stated that Station 5, 11, 12, and 13 were the primary crews who responded, but Station 5 removed the three individuals from the structure.
As of this publication, we have no additional updates on the conditions of the individuals removed from the structure fire.
