Albuquerque –
Officers from the Albuquerque Police Department are searching for suspects who shot at police this morning as they fled a traffic stop in Southeast Albuquerque.
No officers were struck by gunfire but one officer suffered a minor laceration when he crashed his vehicle as a result of the shooting. The officer was transported to the hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.
Officers currently have a very large perimeter as they search for four suspects who fled a vehicle on foot from the area of San Mateo Blvd. and Zuni Rd. S.E.
The officer initially attempted a traffic stop at 3:54 AM on a white Acura that did not have a license plate. The vehicle was at Tennessee St. and Trumbull Ave. S.E. The vehicle fled the traffic stop and the officer attempted to attach a Starchase GPS device to the vehicle, which was not successful. At 3:56 AM, the officer advised that a passenger in the vehicle was firing several gunshots at officers.
The suspects drove westbound on Trumbull and eventually reached the Wells Fargo bank at San Mateo and Zuni, where they exited the car and fled on foot.
According to APD’s civilian PIO, officers took one suspect into custody. The other individuals who were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting were not located.
Authorities have opened up the perimeter and roads are open to traffic. However, investigators are still collecting evidence.
