On June 14th, 2024, we reported on a shooting that left a man dead on the 600 block of Coal Ave SE. We are now learning what lead up to the shooting.
According to the criminal complaint, APD officers were dispatched on June 11th, 2024, in response to an altercation between the victim and the suspect, 19-year-old Alex Trujillo of Albuquerque. The incident involved the victim threatening Trujillo with a knife.
On June 14th, Trujillo and the victim were at the 600 block of Coal when Trujillo threw a rock through a car window nearby. The victim confronted Trujillo about the vandalism, and it lead to the victim getting shot.
According to the criminal complaint, Trujillo fled on foot from the scene and he dialed 911 to tell dispatchers he wanted to turn himself in. Trujillo reportedly said that he couldn’t believe he had shot someone. Trujillo then continued to a family residence to have them stash the gun in a shed. He also told family members he shot in self defense because the victim pulled a knife on him. The criminal complaint states that witnesses never saw the victim produce the knife and APD homicide detectives never found a knife.
Trujillo is booked on first degree murder charges and tampering with evidence.
