Homicide detectives with the Albuquerque Police Department have now charged Oscar Rivera in connection with the August 2025 murder and robbery of Alfonso Romero.
Detectives had previously arrested Daniel Rivera, Oscar Rivera’s brother, in December for the murder.
Both suspects are accused of breaking into a home at 9109 Copper Ave. N.E. in the early hours of August 9. They demanded money and drugs from the occupants. Romero, 45, was shot and died as a result of his wounds. Another man was also shot and injured that day, but he survived his wounds.
Oscar Rivera, 39, was charged with murder on Wednesday. This charge was brought after homicide detectives gained more information about his involvement in a robbery and subsequent shooting. Oscar Rivera was already incarcerated in Valencia County on unrelated charges.

Both men are charged with an open count of murder, conspiracy, aggravated burglary, robbery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery and felon in possession of a firearm.
On August 9, 2025, when APD advised the media of this investigation they categorized it as a suspicious death and stated “Detectives are currently investigating a suspicious death at 9109 Copper Ave. NE.
