SE Albuquerque, NM – According to the Albuquerque Police Department, around 4:30AM, Officers were originally dispatched to reports of a shooting near the area of Alvarado Dr SE & Zuni Rd SE. The individual died from their gunshot wound injuries prior to APD Officers arriving on scene. It appeared to us that the shooting happened at the “Smokers R’ Us” Smoke Shop located at 5808 Zuni Rd SE.
The Albuquerque Police Department’s Homicide Unit is taking over the shooting investigation.
For 2023, this is the Albuquerque Metro Area’s 41st homicide.
This is a developing story, we will update you when more information becomes available.
This is the second homicide investigation in six hours and the third homicide investigation in the last 28 hours. On Friday, April 21st, 2023 at 10:20PM, APD was called out to the 100 block of Altez St. NE for a shooting investigation. When APD Officers arrived, the individual had already died from their injuries. At approximately 3AM, on Friday morning, APD announced they were working a homicide investigation at the the Luxury Apartments at 2500 Carlisle Blvd. An offender was arrested on Friday night around 7PM for that homicide.
UPDATE:
Around 2PM, APD’s civilian PIO Gilbert Gallegos sent out an email that said:
“APD detectives are investigating an overnight shooting as a justifiable homicide.
Detectives learned the owner of the business, located at 5808 Zuni Rd., S.E., shot an intruder who appeared to breaking in with burglary tools. The man who was shot by the business owner died as a result of gunshot wounds. He has not yet been identified.
Detectives are working with the District Attorney’s Office as they continue to investigate the business owner’s claims of self-defense. The man was released from the scene after an interview with detectives.”
If this homicide is deemed justifiable by APD Homicide Detectives and ultimately, the DA’s office, it still is classified as a homicide by the OMI, even though the shooter is not charged.
