Albuquerque –
26-year-old Leon Martin of Albuquerque is facing larceny charges stemming from stealing cash from his employer.
Martin, a former Isleta Police Department officer, was convicted of sexual assault of a suspected drunk driver in 2021. Martin was on duty when he took the DWI suspect to a remote area and raped her. Martin was sentenced to four years in prison, plus two years on probation once he’s released.
In this current case, a criminal complaint states that Martin’s boss at Duke City Accounting called the Albuquerque Police Department after he observed Martin taking cash from the business over a 6-month period. The supervisor provided the Albuquerque Police Department with video evidence of Martin putting money in his wallet. In total, over $3,080.00 was taken.
According to the criminal complaint, the officer reviewed video footage showing the camera being redirected away from the cash drawer and then pointed back toward it, with Martin visible in the frame. In a separate incident, the employer reported that more than $1,000 was missing from his wallet after Martin picked it up and moved it outside the camera’s view.
Martin was arrested and charged with larceny. A warrant was issued for his probation violation.
In the rape case, the State of New Mexico paid $1.5 million dollars in a settlement to the victim. On the criminal side, Martin has to register as a sex offender.
