Suspect Caught in Halloween Murder, “I didn’t think I was going to kill him.”

Albuquerque Police arrested, 20-year-old Sebastian Ocana of Albuquerque for the 2022 Halloween murder of Mateo Lopez. ABQ RAW reported about the murder that police were dispatched to a head-on collision in Downtown Albuquerque near the intersection of 14th Street and Marquette. When officers arrived they found two vehicles had crashed into each other. One of the drivers had a gunshot wound not related to the crash that happened.

According to a criminal complaint, detectives were able to piece together from security videos and witness statements that Ocana and the victim, Lopez, had an interaction that lead to Ocana shooting at Lopez’s car. The complaint goes on to state that the two had a prior interaction a few months back relating to Ocana touching Lopez’s girlfriend’s butt. At that time it started a fight at Tingley Beach and threats were made.

Ocana told detectives that he went fishing at Tingley Beach on October 31st, 2022 and saw Lopez and decided to leave the area. Ocana alleges Lopez ran up on his vehicle and pulled over to let him pass. The two pulled next to each other and Ocana fired at Lopez. Lopez’s vehicle did have a black handgun on the floor board. Lopez was shot with a .22 hand gun and Ocana got rid of the gun by giving it to an unknown male.

Ocana is charged with first degree murder and tampering with evidence. Ocana has an adult criminal past dating back to 2022 ranging from having a handgun under 19, felony drug trafficking, and moving violations.
