At approximately 11:00AM, emergency dispatch sent both Albuquerque Fire Rescue and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office to respond to a multi-vehicle collision on I-40 eastbound near the 170 mile marker.

The incident on I-40 eastbound involves a semi-truck, with reports suggesting the crash may have resulted in a rollover. Allegedly, at least one child under 10 years old was ejected from a vehicle and the juvenile is currently in critical condition.

Drivers should anticipate significant traffic congestion on I-40 eastbound as authorities work to clear the scene and conduct an investigation. AFR still might be on the scene of this crash.

Update to I-40 Eastbound Crash:

We have received an update from AFR on the semi rollover which says:

On April 13th, 2024 at around 11:02am, AFR was dispatched to EB I-40 just east of the Carnuel exit for a 29D2, motor vehicle roll over accident. Due due the mechanism of injury and number of patients AFR sent a full first alarm medical dispatch consisting of Engine 12, Engine 8, Rescue 12, Med 12, Rescue 8, Heavy Rescue Sqaud 2, Medic supervisor Unit 78 and Battalion 2.

E12 was the first arriving unit reporting a travel trailer that had rolled over and 2 heavily damaged vehicles.  There were a total of 5 patients involved in the incident of which 4 were transported to an area hospital.  BCSO is handling the investigation of the incident.

There were no injuries to any fire department personnel.  This incident reminds us that seat belts save lives and should be worn at all times in any motor vehicle.

This evening, we initially reached out to AFR to inquire about any updates regarding the child involved in the crash. AFR did not provide any additional information beyond the fact that Rescue 12 had transported the child to a local hospital. Subsequently, we contacted BCSO, and received a response from BCSO’s Public Information Officer, Deputy Connor Otero, who informed us that:

The child that was ejected is now listed in stable condition.
