“Wrestling Match for Their Life” APD Officers Shoot and Kill Convicted Felon with Gun

Earlier today, we reported about an officer-involved shooting that resulted in an adult male being shot dead on the 11600 block of Mountain Rd NE. AT around 1:45 PM, APD reported gunfire to dispatch and one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial call was for officers from the Foothills Area Command to respond to a 911 call about a domestic dispute.

“At this point in time, they did advise the individual that he was under arrest. The individual tried to flee the scene, and officers were able to tackle the individual at this point in time for about the next two minutes. Officers are in a wrestling match for their life as the individual is armed with a handgun, and officers are trying to keep the handgun pinned down to the ground,” said APD Chief Harold Medina.

Chief Medina says multiple rounds were fired and the suspect may have fired at least one shot during the fight with officers. Medina went on to say that the suspect was a convicted felon and should not have been in possession of a firearm.

“He also did make several statements, such as, I don’t want to do this or don’t make me do this,” said Chief Medina.

We observed the adult male dead in the street across from the home where the call for service started. There appeared to be a firearm near the body. There were also belongings and baskets of clothes out in the driveway, indicating someone was possibly moving when the incident happened.

Property records indicate a man who lives at the address was convicted in 1995 of felony gun charges and pled guilty to a separate felony charge in 2001.  The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating the incident, and in a few weeks, APD will have a formal press conference detailing what happened. We will cover that when it occurs.
