Albuquerque –
According to a recently released criminal complaint, on February 13th, 2022, the Albuquerque Police Department were called to University of New Mexico Hospital in reference to a child abuse call. When officers arrived they were told that a five-month-old female baby had “inexplicable bruising” to her face with “fixed and dilated pupils”. Medical personnel also noted a hard spot on her head from trauma.
APD and Children, Youth, and Families immediately started investigating the child abuse claims and learned that the father, twenty-four-year old, Adam Garcia of Albuquerque was responsible for the injuries to the baby. When asked about the injuries, Garcia believed it could have happened when he placed her into her crib. Garcia stated they always put her down on her back before rolling her onto her stomach. He attributed the facial trauma as being self inflicted scratching of her own face while she slept.

The baby’s mother sent Garcia a text message about the abuse:
“You killed my daughter!! I have to take her off life support this week you don’t care about us!!! Leave us alone you’re not the man I thought you were. You betrayed me and my children I can never forgive you for that it’s over forever. I’m going to block you now.”
On June 28th, 2022, APD received the baby’s Office of Medical Investigator report indicating the cause of death as blunt force head trauma and the manner of death was homicide. On August 28th, 2022, Garcia was apprehended by the United States Marshals and booked on child abuse resulting in death under the age of 12.
Garcia also abused the baby’s mother and one of his children back in 2020. That case was dismissed because the mother did not want to proceed with the charges at that time. In 2021, domestic violence charges were again filed in a similar situation between the couple. That case was sent to a 90-day pre-adjudication diversion program. Garcia completed the program and the charges were dismissed.
Garcia will have a pre-trial hearing for the homicide of his child in the coming week. We will be following this case for further developments.
