Albuquerque –

An Albuquerque man has been charged with multiple federal crimes, including drug trafficking and assaulting federal officers during a high-speed pursuit earlier this month.

Nicholas Mares, aka “Youngster,” 22, appeared before a federal judge today for a detention hearing, and will remain in custody pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled.

According to the criminal complaint, on May 28, 2024, Mares sold 5,000 fentanyl pills to an undercover FBI agent during a controlled purchase.

Then on July 18, 2024, FBI agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop of Mares near the area of Atrisco and 49th Street NW and 47th Street NW in NW Albuquerque. Mares allegedly rammed his vehicle into an FBI vehicle occupied by four special agents, then fled at high speed into oncoming traffic all while a child was in his car with him. During the pursuit, approximately 10,000 fentanyl pills were allegedly discarded onto the roadway from Mares’ vehicle before he eluded capture.

If convicted of the current charges, Mares faces up to life in prison. It is unclear who the child belonged to.

  1. Too bad for “Youngster”, eh? Had a child with him? Shoot. It’s what homies do.
Lock up this homie and throw away the keys for life!! Oh, wait!! I forgot. This is New Mexico. That’ll NEVER happen. I doubt if he’ll even remain locked up while he awaits his trial, because of the likes of Dreamy Mayor Timmy and Gomer Medina. They have RUINED this city, and the chipmunk in Santa Fe, Michelle, has ruinned our state. We’re hosed!!!

      1. Mayor Martin Chavez started the destruction. Under Magnificent Marty, APD stopped requiring a college degree; cut down one-on-one instruction at the Academy (going from two to four cadet classes per year). Then Barry loosened the psychological testing requirements, eliminating the “pass/fail” system that kept a lot of psychopaths out of uniform.
APD has always been full of lunatics–you could write a book. Remember Ninja Bandit Matt Griffin (1988-89), who stole a gun from the evidence room, robbed banks, stole cars, and executed his enemies while in uniform? In 2003, Christine Roessner was left with paralysis and brain damage when an APD cruiser cut in front of the motorcycle she was riding and brake-checked it, causing a crash. In ’05 Officer Christopher Chase was convicted of raping a woman in the back seat of his squad car, and that year a mysterious chemical spill in the evidence room destroyed evidence from over 230 drug and homicide cases, with APD forgetting to inform the DA’s office. The evidence room was regularly pilfered of cash, jewelry, merch and drugs in those days, while Chief Gallegos covered it up. This is a tiny fraction of their work.
I suppose it’s gotten much better, since their heyday.
