The criminal complaint states that as APD officers searched the rear of the building, additional officers entered the alleyway directly behind the store. Upon entering the alleyway, officers observed a white male matching the description provided by store employees. The male was going through multiple bags and putting on clothing. Officers exited their vehicles and approached the subject. An officer identified himself as Albuquerque Police and gave verbal commands for the male to get on the ground. The suspect complied and was immediately handcuffed and taken into custody. According to the criminal complaint, the retail theft suspect was in possession of several bags and a Target shopping basket.

After taking the alleged merchandise thief to an APD patrol unit, the officer conducted a search of the male suspect and discovered that he was wearing an ankle monitor and was currently on probation. The subject was placed in the back of patrol unit and transported back to Target, where a store employee positively identified the male as the shoplifting thief. The suspect was identified as Ryan Dorbandt, age 34.

The Target employee provided a receipt for the items stolen during the current incident, totaling $879.86. She also provided documentation for a prior theft committed by Dorbandt on August 3, 2025, totaling $289.97. The combined total for both thefts amounted to $1,169.83. The store employee supplied copies of the complaint and a list of stolen items. She also stated that Dorbandt exited through the emergency doors, triggering the store’s alarm system.

An APD officer ran Dorbandt’s information through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and confirmed three active felony warrants. Dorbandt had also been criminally trespassed from the Target location and was previously informed that returning would result in arrest.

Dorbandt was charged with the following:

  • Felony Shoplifting over $250 (30-16-20)
  • False Report of Fire/Bomb (30-07-21)
  • Three active felony warrants

After his arrest, Dorbandt was transported to the Prisoner Transport Unit and later booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.

According to New Mexico court records, a probation violation warrant was issued for Dorbandt on August 7th due to his failure to comply with the conditions of his probation. The warrant was cancelled the following day, on August 8th. Dorbandt is currently being held without bond pending his next court hearing.
