Albuquerque –
A serious injury crash has closed northbound Interstate 25 near Avenida Cesar Chavez and is affecting the left lanes of southbound Interstate 25.
Officers with the Albuquerque Police Department and New Mexico State Police, along with crews from Albuquerque Fire Rescue, Bernalillo County Fire Rescue, and Albuquerque Ambulance, are at the scene. The crash involved at least two vehicles, reportedly a semi was overturned across lanes of Interstate 25 northbound, and sparked a vehicle fire.
At least one person was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening burn injuries sustained in the crash. Three additional people were transported with minor injuries by AFR or Albuquerque Ambulance Service. According to AFR’s Battalion Chief on scene, two additional individuals were evaluated at the location but declined transport.
Traffic is being diverted from northbound I-25 at Gibson Blvd or, if necessary, at Avenida Cesar Chavez. Some southbound traffic is also being directed to exit at Avenida Cesar Chavez. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and expect significant delays.
Road closures are subject to change as emergency crews continue their response and NMSP crash investigators work to determine the cause of the accident.

UPDATE 6:36 PM:
Officers have reportedly reopened the southbound lanes of Interstate 25. NM DOT traffic cameras show vehicles moving through the southbound lanes, though traffic remains backed up.
UPDATE 7:20 PM:
Northbound Interstate 25 remains closed as crews continue cleanup efforts and investigate the crash.


UPDATE 7:22 PM:
Albuquerque Fire sent an update on the crash which advised:
“On June 30th, at approximately 17:26pm, Albuquerque Fire Rescue units were dispatched to I-25 northbound at Avenida Cesar Chavez for reports of a multi vehicle collision with vehicles on fire, coded a 71D4. E2 and R2 were the first arriving units and reported a large box truck and a small Jeep heavily involved in flames. There were a total of 4 vehicles involved in the accident. The fire was brought under control within about 15 minutes of AFR arrival. One person was transported to an area hospital with critical burn injuries. 3 additional individuals were also transported for minor injuries. 2 individuals were treated on scene but declined transport. There were no injuries to any firefighters involved. APD and NMSP also responded to this incident for cause determination, investigation, and traffic control. Bernalillo County Fire also assisted with a water tender apparatus. NM DOT is now assisting with cleanup of the incident. No additional information is currently available.“
