2024 Murder Stats Wrap-up: Albuquerque Metro Still Violent with Murder, Down 12% from 2023

Albuquerque –

The Albuquerque metro area has seen a violent uptick in homicides over the last four years with each year having over 100 homicides. We kept close track of all the homicides during 2024. We have the break down below. As always we go by the New Mexico OMI(Office of the Medical Investigators) definition of homicide and we do NOT omit homicides like some police agencies do when reporting end of year stats.

The total number of homicides in the Albuquerque area for 2024 is: 134. Please note, we are still waiting to hear from the Office of the Medical Investigator for final numbers from the last three months (October to December), so the final number is subject to change slightly.

The break down for each agency investigating a homicide is:

APD: 115 (9 of these homicides were ruled justified and 9 were officer involved shootings, also considered justified)

NMSP: 1 (Officer involved shooting)

FBI: 2 (Case was on Isleta Pueblo Tribal land within the metro BERNCO area)

BCSO: 16 (1 justified homicide)

Sadly there was an uptick in murder/suicide incidents with five cases in 2024. In these cases the suspect killed themselves after murdering the person(s). There were two instances where there were more than one victim during the suicide/murder incidents.

Manner of death:

Shooting: 105

Stabbed: 10

Shot and Stabbed: 3

Beaten: 2

Blunt Force Object: 2

Vehicle: 1

Child Abuse Resulting in Death: 2

Other manner of death or cause of death unknown: 9

The Albuquerque metro area averaged around 11 homicides a month in 2024. The highest amount of homicides in a month was August with 20 homicides. July had the fewest number of homicides with five, two of them were deemed justifiable by APD. The last homicide of 2024 was a teen shootout in Southwest Albuquerque that led to an underage teen being killed in a SW neighborhood park.

We are often asked why our numbers differ from what other media or police agencies report. The Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) does not have a separate category or classification for justifiable homicides in its definition of homicides. According to the OMI there is no such distinction between justified and non justified, the OMI categorizes all homicides as just homicides no matter if a court says they were justified. This is why ABQRAW counts all homicides in our total.

* 2023 homicide total was 151
