AFR and APD Handling Serious Injury Crash Near Morris St NE

Albuquerque –

Around 12:25 PM, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to a crash near the 10900 block of Mahlon Ave NE, which is near Morris St NE and Mahlon Ave NE.

Reportedly, a vehicle crashed into a residence, and two individuals are listed in “red” status, which means they have life-threatening injuries. One patient is supposedly pinned, and AFR is diligently working to extricate them.

As of 1:00 PM, PNM and NM Gas Company was en-route to shut off the utilities. Utilities are being shut off in the area to ensure the safety of the crash victims as they are being removed from the crash scene, but also to ensure the safety of the first responders.

Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route and avoid the area.

We have a reporter headed to the scene, we will update you when we learn more information.

Update:

AFR was able to extricate the pinned individual and transport them to the hospital. A total of two individuals were taken to the hospital, both are listed in critical condition.

Update 2:

According to APD, Mark Castello, faces charges for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, leading to a fatal crash today. Castello allegedly disregarded a stop sign at Propps St., crashing his white Ford Expedition into a home at 10912 Mahlon Ave. N.E. The impact pushed a parked car into the residence, striking a 74-year-old homeowner who was inside.

Emergency services, responding to the crash at approximately 12:25 PM, transported the injured homeowner to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Castello, aged 62, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital. He now faces charges including DWI resulting in death, driving with a revoked license, open container violation, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance. Castello admitted to consuming meth and marijuana before operating the vehicle, compounding the severity of the incident.
