Bernalillo County, N.M. – Just before 12:30 p.m. Friday a Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center corrections officer was injured, after suffering a gunshot wound to his foot.

The incident occurred at the facility’s exterior security checkpoint, which is manned by armed MDC corrections officers. The injured officer was transported to the hospital to receive treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) responded to the scene. Normal security operations at MDC, including the exterior security checkpoint, have resumed.

The incident was initially reported as an accidental discharge. No inmates, members of the public, or other officers were involved in this incident.

This is the second time in a matter of months a gun was discharged on the property. The other incident was a suicide attempt by a former MDC employee.
