Albuquerque –

On January 20th, 2025, an Albuquerque Police officer initially attempted a traffic stop at 3:54 a.m. on a white Acura that did not have a license plate. The vehicle was at Tennessee St. and Trumbull Ave., S.E. The vehicle immediately fled the traffic stop attempt and the officer attempted to attach a tracking device to the vehicle, which was not successful. At 3:56 a.m., during the pursuit the officer advised that a passenger in the vehicle was actively firing several gunshots at pursuing officers.

According to a criminal complaint, the officer was conducting the traffic stop and heard loud pops coming from the direction of the Acura and hissing noises coming from his own vehicle. The officer also saw muzzle flashes from the position of the vehicle. The officer pursued the vehicle and clipped the back of the fleeing car and the police unit crashed into a tree. The offender vehicle came to a stop as well and all of the occupants fled.

The complaint goes on to say, after the occupants fled the car officers began canvassing the area. They were able to find a “heavy set male wearing a dark hoodie, dark pants, and shoes with white trim.” This particular male ran away from officers and he was trying to gain access into nearby apartments.

The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Joeray Newson of Albuquerque. The criminal complaint says that while Newson was running from police he ditched two guns. APD took Newson into custody and it was determined he was a convicted federal felon. The “heavy-set” Newson was taken to a local hospital for a touch of the popular criminal disease incarceritis and he will be booked into MDC for the charges of: Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Aggravated Assault on a peace officer, Resisting or evading an officer, Tampering with evidence, Criminal Damage, and Concealing identity.

APD said in an email to media:

APD is working with federal law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s Office on a federal warrant for the violation of his probation and federal charges related to today’s shooting.

    1. First of all this story is completely wrong. The that was involved had a tag. So police was harassing these individuals. Then the reason he went to hospital is because he was hypertension and rhw police told nurse not to help him. He was looking for help. Once police found he was on federal probation that when they accused him. This man was 5 months from completing probation with no violations in 2 half year. He was Baptist went and got his cdl. Helping coach football for young men. He was starting a halfway home for prisoners because he understood their he wanted to be the example of rehabilitation. Never did they see him run from anything or seen him with guns. They found a police offering gun in a yard and said it was his. So before you drag his name get facts. We’ll see what everyone says when this case breaks out to be once again bad police. It’s not the street that all the problem it some officer too! Not all police but most of them are corrupting our streets too. Not to mention this isn’t the first falsely accused proven not guilty but we don’t mention that right!
