Albuquerque –
On June 21st, 2025, UFC MMA Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones announced his retirement from the sport in a social media post:
“this decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years.” He closed the post by adding that “MMA will always be a part of who I am, and I’m excited to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways.”
But, there was more to the story as the Albuquerque Police Department had recently responded to a two-vehicle crash on February 24th, 2025, near San Mateo and Lomas. Officers arrived on scene to find a woman naked from the waist down in the front passenger seat of a car. She indicated that UFC fighter Jon Jones was originally driving her around but fled the scene. According to the criminal complaint, the woman displayed signs of intoxication.
The woman told responding officials that Jones was taking her to one of his residences in Albuquerque to drink and eat some mushrooms. The woman said she did not have bottoms on due to a bathroom accident at Jones’ house. They were allegedly driving to her house to get more clothing prior to the crash.
APD officers called Jones for follow up and when they spoke to him he was slurring his words on the phone and sounded like he was under the influence of something. During the crash investigation, Jones kept calling and texting the woman, the complaint states he called her over 13 times.
Jones is no stranger to metro law enforcement. Jones’ previous encounters with local police include a 2015 crash involving a pregnant woman; a 2016 citation for racing; a 2019 disorderly conduct incident at a strip club; a 2020 charge for DWI, open container, and negligent use of a deadly weapon; and then a alleged 2024 assault of a drug tester who went one of his homes for a random drug test.
In police encounters outside of Albuquerque, Jones was arrested in 2012 for driving under the influence (DUI) in Binghamton, New York, this while serving as the UFC light heavyweight champion, after crashing his Bentley into a utility pole. Then in the early morning hours of September 24, 2021, Jones was arrested by officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. During this arrest, he became agitated and slammed his head against the hood of a police vehicle, resulting in an initial felony charge for injuring or tampering with a vehicle. In the Las Vegas incident, Jones took a plea deal in December 2021.
Jones was officially charged last week on June 17th, 2025 for leaving the scene of an accident with no great bodily harm.
