APD detectives charged three individuals who are, or were Albuquerque Fire Department personnel. They are being accused of raping a woman in July during a gathering that followed a golf tournament. APD officers responded to a report of a sexual assault on July 15, 2023, at an apartment complex located at 601 Menaul Blvd., N.E. Following the alleged rape, the victim escaped the apartment through a bathroom window and she was found by a man walking his dog.

According to the criminal complaint, a group of firefighters identified as Aden Heyman, 46, Angel Portillo, 32, and Anthony Martin, 44, (at time of incident Anthony was employed with AFR and recently retired) made plans with some females to drink and swim at an apartment complex.

A female victim “hooked up” with Portillo in an apartment unit bathroom and after the alleged act they went to a bedroom. When they were in the bedroom Martin and Portillo entered the room and Heyman instructed Portillo and Martin on how to have sex with her. The three took turns on the victim even though she kept saying no. She alleges during the incident the older gentlemen was teaching them “how to rape” her.

AFR Lt. Jason Fejer, public information officer said the two active individuals are on administrative leave and the disciplinary process will be based on the findings of the investigation.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue released the following statement from Chief Emily Jaramillo after charges were filed against three firefighters:

“We were made aware of APD’s criminal investigation in July and took immediate steps to launch an internal investigation to determine if the employees violated AFR policies. The three employees were immediately placed on administrative leave. The allegations were alarming and we determined a thorough investigation was necessary to determine the facts.

“We are fully cooperating with APD investigators and treat these allegations seriously. Now that criminal charges have been filed in court, we will respect the judicial process and refrain from commenting on details of the case.”

APD charged Aden Heyman, 46, Angel Portillo, 32, and Anthony Martin, 44, with Criminal Sexual Penetration (2nd degree). Detectives learned that Heyman and Portillo are employed by AFR and Martin recently retired from AFR. A search of the transparency portal shows all three are no longer on the City of Albuquerque payroll.
